Volleyball: Dexter turns out the lights on Saline with impressive 3-1 victory

Coach Paula Palmer Burns and the Dexter volleyball team is serving up what could just be a special season. At the very least, it will be a memorable one based on the early results.

In a game pushed back a night because of a power outage at Dexter High School, the Dreadnaughts welcomed back the Saline Hornets for an SEC Red match on Wednesday night. And there was enough electricity in the gym to light up all of Washtenaw County.

“Man, that was FUN,” said Burns after Dexter scored a 22-25, 25-21, 27-25, 25-17 victory over the always tough Hornets. “We were focused on working together through every contact, communicating through every transition, and moving forward from any error. We knew trusting each other and leaning on the strength of our mindset would lead to success.”

And success they had!

After a slow start through the first set, Dexter focused on building momentum to carry into the next. Concentrating on key transitions to score consistently, the Dreadnaughts controlled the second set.

“We dropped behind in the third set and made adjustments to defense in order to battle back and win in extra points,” Burns said.

Dexter controlled the fourth set from the first service with Braedy Wineman serving eight straight points. And the Dreadnaughts never looked back.

“We focused on keeping the serve and competing when we were out of system in our offense,” Burns said. “We also focused on keeping Saline out of system to prevent their strong hitters from scoring consistently on us.”

Dexter’s leaders

Junior setter, Braedy Wineman with 43 assists, 14 digs, and 6 kills.

Senior, outside hitter Anna Creech with 15 kills, 22 digs, and 2 blocks.

Senior, outside hitter Jamie Geise with 20 kills and 15 digs.

Senior, opposite hitter Avery Goodrich with 12 kills, and 15 digs.

Veronica Sannino contributed 20 digs on the night as libero.

Middle blockers Senior Hanna Quinn and Junior Mikah Salemi led the defense with a phenomenal presence at the net putting Saline’s hitters at a disadvantage.
