The undefeated Dexter football team will open its 2022 playoff season at home against Milford at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28 at Al Ritt Stadium. The Mavericks enter the postseason with a 5-4 overall record and won two of its last three games to qualify for the playoffs.
Milford defeated Kettering 38-12 in week seven before falling to playoff-bound South Lyon East 10-0 in week eight. They finished the regular season with a 29-7 win over Lakeland. Other wins were over New Boston Huron, Walled Lake Northern and Walled Lake Central.
Dexter finished the regular season at 9-0 overall, won an SEC Red Division title and are the No. 1 ranked team in the state in Division 2. The finished the regular season with a huge 21-14 victory over Saline and then defeated rival Chelsea 45-0 on Friday.
“I can’t wait to see what this team can do (in the playoffs),” said Dexter Coach Phil Jacobs following the win at Chelsea. “I feel we can go at least a few rounds and then who knows. One game at a time.”
The winner of the Milford-Dexter game will play Friday, Nov. 4 against the winner of the South Lyon (6-3) – South Lyon East (7-2) game in a District final at Dexter – if the Dreadnaughts win. South Lyon East defeated South Lyon 27-21 on Friday in a regular-season finale.
Milford has lost in the state playoffs in the first round the past two seasons.
Dexter finished with a Division 2 most 81.444 points. Livonia Franklin (8-1) was second with 76.889 points and undefeated Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central was third with 73 points. Franklin’s only loss came to D-1 powerhouse Belleville.
The Dreadnaughts outscored their opponents 362-83 in their nine wins. They held Saline to 14 points and then blanked Chelsea – both teams qualified for the state playoffs – in their final two games of the season.
In the win over the Bulldogs, Dexter allowed just 92 total yards to a Chelsea team that rarely had trouble moving the ball all season. Chelsea managed just 38 yards on the ground and 54 in the air.
On the offensive side of the ball, Reeves Taylor continued his incredible season with 21 of 24 passing for 217 yards and three scores in the win over Chelsea. The senior quarterback seems to be getting better every time he steps on the field. Six Dexter receivers had 15 or more yards receiving led by Micah Davis with 68 yards, Cole Cabana with 47 yards and Joey Tessmer with 45.
Cabana had 128 yards rushing on 15 carries against Chelsea and rushed for over 100 yards in all but three of Dexter’s games. He had 93 yards in the win over Monroe, 68 in the win over Lincoln and 77 in the win over Skyline – all in limited action.
SEC Red foes Ann Arbor Huron and Saline will meet in a first-round D-1 playoff game at Saline. The Hornets won 35-24 in their regular-season game way back in week two. The winner gets to play the winner of Woodhaven-Belleville.
Chelsea will open the playoffs at Charlotte in D-4.
