Dexter Varsity Dance team goes top three in three categories at Great Lakes Challenge

The Dexter Varsity Dance team took first, second and third place at the UDA Great Lakes Dance Challenge on Nov. 12 at Walled Lake Northern High school after dancing and cheering on the Dexter football team at previous night’s playoff victory.

The Dexter Varsity Dance Team, coached by Morgan Dubey and Julia Acton, is led by team captains Clara Thomas and Lainey Sawin. The team competed in three categories at the UDA Great Lakes Dance Challenge.

The competition included dance teams from Crown Pointe High School, Eisenhower High School, Grand Blanc High School, Mercy High School, PCEP Dance Team, South Lyon East High School and Stoney Creek High School. Dexter took first place in Game Day, second place in Pom, and third in jazz.

They also took home a special award for Game Day crowd appeal.

The dance team qualified for the UDA National Dance Team Championship at camp in July. Today’s competition kicked off their 2022-23 competition season on the road to Nationals in February.

The next competition is UDA Chicagoland Dance Challenge, Jan. 7 in Rosemont, IL, followed by UDA Southern Michigan Dance Challenge, Jan. 21 in Sterling Heights, and finally the 2023 UDA National Dance Team Championship Feb. 3-5 in Orlando.
