The Huron boys’ basketball team used six triples in the first half to build a comfortable lead and coasted to a 50-37 win Thursday night over visiting Dexter in an SEC Red contest.
“We had 13 turnovers (mostly unforced) in the first half and that put us in a hole we couldn’t get out of,” said Dexter Coach Jason Rushton.
And the turnover woes continued in the third quarter for the Dreadnaughts.
“We went to our bench and subbed all five to let them play it out and we saw some fight in that group and some things we can build on,” Rushton said.
Huron led 15-10 after the first quarter and took a 29-18 lead into halftime. The River Rats outscored the Dreadnaughts 10-9 in the third and 11-10 in the fourth.
Junior Justin Latham led Huron with 12 points, including two triples in the first half. Junior Mo Doumbouya had 11 points. Senior Braylon Dickerson hit two triples in the first quarter and finished with eight points. Yaseen Issa had six points for Huron.
Dexter was led by senior Reeves Taylor with nine points (seven in the first quarter) and senior Evan Haroldson with eight points – including two three-pointers. Jack Demerell, Xavier Blumberg and AJ Vaughn had six points apiece for Dexter.
Dexter hosts Lincoln on Tuesday. Huron plays Saturday at Benton Harbor.
