Soccer: Skyline faces Saline in District final on Thursday

The Skyline and Saline soccer teams have played to draws this season during their SEC matchups on the pitch. But Thursday night’s game is going to have to have a winner as the two storied programs meet in a District final at Lincoln HS. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.

Skyline and Saline played to a scoreless draw and a 1-1 tie during the regular season.

The Eagles began postseason play with a 3-0 win over Dexter in a District opener. Just 15 minutes into the first half, Skyline scored, but their elation was short-lived as the goal was waved off due to offsides. Luckily for the Eagles, Gabriella Marble was able to convert a few minutes later with a beautiful, long range shot. Aggressive play in the second half led to a few chances, but none found the back of the net until Brianna Ferguson scored with 4 minutes left to play. Casey Vigo added an insurance goal with under 2 minutes in the game.

The Eagles then defeated Belleville 5-0 in a District semifinal game on Tuesday to reach the finals.

Saline edged Pioneer 2-1 in the other semifinal game. Pioneer opened District play with a 2-1 win over Huron.

The winner of District 9 advances to the Woodhaven Regional and will face the winner of Woodhaven-Edsel Ford at 7 p.m. on June 6.
