Football: Skyline ends 23-game losing streak in season opener

The Skyline football team defeated Pioneer 23-7 on Sept. 25, 2020 – it was the program’s last victory before opening this season with an impressive 30-18 win over the Burton Bentley Bulldogs. The win snapped a 23-game losing streak that spanned more than two seasons for the Eagles.

Bentley actually won its next game – 40-22 over Harbor Springs – proving the Eagles knocked off a pretty good team. The Eagles, however, dropped its second game of the young season on Friday with a 24-14 loss to Temperance Bedford, a team that has reached the state playoffs in seven consecutive seasons.

Bedford led 10-7 at the half. The Eagles scored on a 65-yard touchdown run before the break by Ayden Schelcht. The sophomore running back carried the ball 15 times for 100 yards.

Junior linebacker Traci Lincoln was unstoppable on defense. He led the team with 7 tackles and 2 sacks. Junior linebacker Ethan Gherghel recovered a fumble and ran it in for the second Eagle touchdown.

Skyline (1-1) hosts crosstown rival Huron (1-1) on Friday.
