Girls Cross Country: Local teams run at first SEC league meet (see WLAA-D 120 photo gallery)

Rachel Forsyth won by more than 2 minutes and Pioneer took four of the top five spots at the SEC Jamboree 1 on Wednesday afternoon at Indian Creek Park in Temperance Bedford. The Pioneers ran away with the race, which featured all of the teams in the SEC, with 24 points.

Saline was second with 74 points, followed by Dexter (121), Skyline (145), Chelsea (162), Adrian (165), Huron (165), Tecumseh (184), Bedford (230), Monroe (242) and Pinckney (299).

Forsyth, a senior, ran easily and by herself for most of the run on a sunny and perfect day for a race. The former state champion is hitting her stride early after suffering some injuries last season. She finished the race in 16 minutes, 44.46 seconds – Saline’s Elaina Alig was second in 18:42.60.

Pioneer’s seniors dominated the race. Natalie Mello was third (18:50.10), Lydia Bowman was fourth (19:06.5), Sylvia Sank Dufallo fifth (19:11.2) and Katie Hume 11th (19:28.8). Freshman Nina Moore ran 14th (19:44.4), sophomore Quincy Behm was 18th (19:52.9), freshman Frances Brown ran 20th (20:00.1), freshman Lucinda Gubbini was 32rd (20:33.7) and sophomore Hana Boggess was 33rd (20:34.0).

Alena Blumberg (above) led the Dreadnaughts across the finish line. The junior finished in 19:15.2 to place eighth overall and crack a very fast top 10. Junior Annabel O’Haver was 23rd (20:01.30), freshman Kodie Snyder was 30th (20:28.6) and sophomore Hannah Boucher was 31st (20:30.7). Junior Addison Bruckman was 36th (20:54.3), senior Kate Varitek was 37th (21:08.7), junior Olivia Shaieb was 41st (22:32.5), senior Ella Mitchell was 42nd (22:38), junior Hannah Sisson was 53rd (23:02.5) and junior Addison Streetman was 57th (23:35.4). 

Allison Mayer had a strong run for Skyline. The senior ran a time of 19:34.5 to finish 12th overall for the Eagles. A pair of freshman also had a solid runs for the Eagles – Irie Scrase was 22nd (20:00.9) and Becca vanLent was 34th (20:35.7). Senior Alexandria Mason was 47th in 22:52.3 and senior Aileen Bachrens was 48th in 22:52.5. Sophomore Grace Hopkins finished 68th (24:21.3), sophomore Ivy Miller was 76th (25:11.4), senior Madeleine Kauffman was 80th (25:46.8) and senior Hannah Hopkins was 86th (26:55.7).

The River Rats had two runners crack a competitive top 20 with senior Sonya Shelgikar 15th (19:46) and junior Lucinda Paliani 16th (19:48.7). Sophomore Leena Shelgikar was 27th (20:19.0), senior Sarah Conley was 55th (23:13.8) and junior Sala Motohara ran 74th (24:46.70.
