Football: Dexter runs winning streak to three games with rout of Huron

The Huron football team took a 3-1 record and a convincing three-game winning streak into its game Friday night against Dexter – but the River Rats haven’t seen anything like the Dreadnaughts. And probably hope not see them again.

Dexter was waiting – and willing and wanting to prove something.

After giving up a kickoff return for a touchdown that gave Huron a 7-6 lead, the Dreadnaughts put up 41 consecutive points to take a 47-7 lead after three quarters. The River Rats scored three times in the fourth quarter off mostly Dexter backup players for a 55-29 final.

Dexter improves to 3-2 overall and the Dreads have won three straight games by huge numbers. The offense has scored 155 points in those three wins. Dexter plays on the road against a struggling Skyline team (1-4) on Friday night.

Huron falls to 2-3 on the year and faces the undefeated Saline Hornets on Friday.

Ronny Johnson continues his amazing “run” this season. The junior running back had another huge game, carrying the ball 30 times for 123 yards and four touchdowns. He also had two catches for 31 yards.

Quarterback Cooper Arnedt was effective in the air against the River Rats. The sophomore completed 16 of 28 passes for 205 yards and a touchdown. Huron did have two picks in the game.

Cole Novara, another talented sophomore on the Dexter roster, had eight catches for 105 yards and also ran the ball once for 18 yards. Holden Niemi had four catches for 51 yards and Gabe Rychener had two catches for 18 yards.

While the offense continues to put up big numbers, the Dexter defense has been in lock-down mode for three straight games. They shut out Huron for three quarters before many of the starters took the rest of the night off.

The defense forced five Huron turnovers including a fumble returned 24 yards for a touchdown by sophomore Charlie Pomo.

The defense was led by senior linebacker Davis Taylor with 9 tackles including 2 for a loss and 2 interceptions. Junior Owen Wondrash had 8 tackles including 2 for a loss.  Sophomore Nathan Gersh had 7 tackles, 2 for loss and an interception. Senior Noah Pitts had 7 tackles, including 2 for loss and Conner Robeson also had an interception.
