Football: Dexter, Chelsea head into rivalry game riding long win streaks

Rivalry warning!

It’s MSU week for the Wolverines but it’s also Chelsea week for the Dreadnaughts. Dexter (6-2) has dominated its schedule since starting 0-2 but the Bulldogs (7-1) will be the young team’s first formidable opponent since week two’s game at Saline.

And you can be sure the Dreads will be ready.

Dexter won its sixth straight game on Friday with another easy victory. The Dreadnaughts knocked off league-foe Lincoln 55-12 in another dominating performance. The Railsplitters fall to 1-7 on the season.

Dexter has scored 50 or more points in five consecutive games while the defense has dominated on the other side of the ball.

Running back Ronny Johnson carried the load for the Dreadnaughts on a rainy and chilly night for football. The junior had a huge game with 249 yards rushing on just 17 carries and scored five touchdowns in the win.

Cooper Arnedt had another strong game behind center. The sophomore quarterback was 10-12 passing for 176 yards and a touchdown.

Junior Jaiden Juback had four catches for 42 yards and freshman Holden Niemi had three receptions for 98 yards.

Dexter’s defense also got in on the scoring – twice.

Junior Grant Goodrich intercepted Lincoln’s second offensive play and returned it for a touchdown.  Goodrich also had 9 tackles. Owen Wondrash had a big night with 11 tackles, a sack and an interception returned for a touchdown.

Senior Davis Taylor had 10 tackles, including one for loss. Junior defensive end Chance Sobbry continued his strong play with 9 tackles, including a sack. Sophomore linebacker Nathan Gersh added 7 tackles and a sack.  Senior defensive lineman Xavier Cook also had a big night with 3 quarterback sacks.

Chelsea has bounced back from a rare rough season in 2022. The Bulldogs lost their season opener – 34-14 to Northview – but have won seven straight including a 21-14 win over Jackson on Oct. 6 and a 17-14 victory over Trenton last Friday.

Dexter ended Chelsea’s multi-decade winning streak in the rivalry with a 45-0 win last year at Chelsea. The last time the Dreadnaughts defeated the Bulldogs before last year was a 16-5 win in 1995.
