The Pioneer boys’ swimming and diving team continued its dominance in dual-meets with a 125-61 win over rival Huron on Thursday. Both teams had impressive performances as the friendly rivalry created plenty of fast swims all night long.
Pioneer opened the meet by going one-two in the medley relay.
They went one-two in the 200 freestyle with Christopher Leuciuc taking first (1:50.0) and Charles Knoepp touching second (1:50.22).
Pioneer dominated the IM with Edward Zhang (first, 1:55.69), Isaac Almeida (second, 2:05.01), Cam Kline (third, 2:06.81).
Pioneer went one-two in diving with Gabriel Mercier (276.9 points) and Asher Morgan (181.25).
Zhang won the 100 butterfly in 52.61 with teammate Benjamin Worden touching third in 1:02.53. Jensen Wood won the 100 free in 50.07 and Almeida took third in 52.17 for Pioneer.
Pioneer went one-two in the 500 free with Henry Baumhover taking first (4:53.69) and Henry Colvig taking second (5:05.81).
Pioneer swept the backstroke with Knoepp first (55.83), Kline second (57.43) and Baumhover third (58.81).
Pioneer took the top three spots in the 400 free relay.
The River Rats had a pool full of bright performances, including a win in the 200 free relay (senior/captain John Gao, seniors Graham Baker & Franek Orlowski, and senior/captain Kal Bunnell), clocking in at 1:34.32. Bunnell also took first in the 100 breast, (1:05.22), just ahead of Pioneer’s Leuciuc (1:05.90). Orlowski had a great night, landing second in the 100 fly (59.53) behind Pioneer’s sophomore speedster Zhang (52.61), and third in the 200 free (1:55.75).
Also putting points on the board for the Rats were junior Christian Grudzinski with 5th-place points in the 200 Free (2:04.83) and the 100 Free (55.80); K. Bunnell, 5th in the 200 IM (2:10.11); sophomore Camp Streeter, 3rd in the 500 Free (5:15.89); sophomore Evan Ngo, 5th place points in the 500 Free (5:48.32); Smith, 5th-place points in the 200 IM (2:17.64); sophomore Ethan Yung, 4th-place points in the 100 Back (1:06.45); senior Jeffery Wang, 5th-place points, also in the 100 Back (1:08.65); and senior Victor Heskia, 5th-place points in the 100 Breast (1:20.19).
Huron’s best placing event was the 50-free sprint, with Gao winning in 23.39, and Baker, fresh from a Huron basketball practice, hopping in and taking second (23.80). Huron divers Matisse Fields (170.25), and junior James Hutmacher (149.05) took 3rd and 4th respectively, with seniors Dean Molnar IIII (105.40), and Omar Abdul-Hak (94.55), diving in exhibition, also representing Huron on the board.
Huron travels to Skyline on Thursday, Jan.y 18 for another cross-town contest.
