Girls Basketball: Dexter’s defense too much for Pioneer in SEC Red contest

The Dexter girls’ basketball team didn’t exactly shoot the lights on Wednesday night but their defense was simply brilliant from start to finish – allowing the Dreadnaughts to finish off visiting Pioneer 36-19 in an SEC Red contest.

Dexter led 6-2 after the first quarter and 20-11 at halftime before shutting out the Pioneers in the third quarter to take a 31-11 lead into the final quarter.

Alena Blumberg continued her strong season with a game-high 22 points. Alyssa Gullekson had seven points and Harper Backus scored 5. But it was the Dexter team defense that won this game and if the Dreadnaughts can keep up that intensity they are going to be hard to beat in the SEC Red the rest of the way.

Jordan Davis led Pioneer with seven points. Emmanuel Davis had four points.

Pioneer hosts Monroe on Friday night. Dexter plays at Bedford on Friday night.
