NKFM launches kidney disease awareness campaign for MENA community

ANN ARBOR – Starting April 1, Arab American Heritage Month pays tribute to the heritage, culture, and contributions of Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) communities in this country. The National Kidney Foundation of Michigan (NKFM), headquartered in Ann Arbor, has expanded the reach of its “Are you the 33%?” message to individuals in MENA communities. Their mission is to prevent kidney disease and care for those with it.

“The MENA community is at higher risk for diabetes, which is a leading cause of kidney disease,” states Hassan Fehmi, MD, a former NKFM Scientific Advisory Board member and a Detroit area nephrologist who helps people prevent and manage kidney disease. “A lack of data has hindered progress in raising awareness around chronic diseases in the Arab American community–more research needs to be developed.”

Of Michigan adults, 33% are at risk for kidney disease but most don’t know it. Those with diabetes or high blood pressure are at higher risk for kidney disease. The “Are you the 33%?” digital awareness campaign focuses on reaching and informing those most at risk to take control of their kidney health as well as raising awareness of the risk and relationship between kidney health and COVID-19 complications. In addition to health messages in Arabic on social media, the NKFM website (nkfm.org) is also in Arabic, allowing access to relevant information, resources and links.

The NKFM is committed to kidney health equity for all by increasing access to health information for all Michiganders. Anyone can take the Kidney Risk Quiz to find out if they are part of the 33% and take steps to prevent or manage kidney disease or other chronic diseases. When you take the quiz, you’ll get a result within minutes and the option to receive information about the two tests needed to know your complete kidney function, and questions to ask your doctor.

“Bringing this awareness to the MENA community represents a pivotal moment for our organization, signaling our commitment to innovation, growth, and community engagement,” states Linda Smith-Wheelock, NKFM’s President and CEO. “Arabic is the third most spoken language in Michigan. We are meeting that challenge with our translated website, as well as forming partnerships with clinics and health professionals who care for this community.”

It’s time to think about kidney health. Ask for a kidney health screening the next time you visit your doctor. This simple screening includes a urine and a blood test. Early detection and management of kidney disease can help prevent or reduce complications.

Your health matters — don’t risk a gap in health coverage. Federal changes could affect your health care coverage, especially if you’re a Medicaid member.
