Boys Water Polo: Pioneers compete in competitive tournament in Ohio

By Emily Edgcombe

The Pioneer mens’ water polo team traveled to Upper Arlington, Ohio, for a four-game tournament on Labor Day weekend. It was a tough weekend for the Pioneers but they gained plenty of experience facing strong competition.

Pioneer lost 12-6 to St. Charles and 12-11 to Upper Arlington. They turned it around while playing Thomas Worthington in extra time with a 16-15 shootout victory and also beat Mason, Ohio, 18-5.  “We had a lot of players get a chance to see playing time,” said Pioneer Coach Packard. “Overall, it was a good weekend. We exposed some weaknesses for us to work on for the future.”

Top scorers for the weekend include seniors Sawyer Thompson with 14, Liam MacNeil with 9 and Mark Flautner with 7. Sophomore Elijah Almeida had 14 steals in the four games. Congratulations to the five players with the goals in the shootout: Elijah Almeida, Misi Flautner, Liam MacNeil, Sawyer Thompson, and Henry Colvig.

Pioneer is 10-3 on the season.

The Pioneers host Birmingham Seaholm in their league opener this Thursday, Sept. 5, at Hill Pool. Varsity plays at 6:15 followed by JV.
