Water Polo: Pioneer enjoys plenty of success – at home and on the road

It was a busy weekend for the Pioneers. Twelve members of the varsity team traveled to Bowling Green to play in the Border Battle against teams from Ohio at Cooper Pool. It was a good weekend for games. The Pioneers went 3-1, losing only to St. Charles 16-7. Scores were 19-10 against Sycamore, 24-5 against Princeton, and 15-13 against St. Francis de Sales.

Leading goal scorers over the weekend were seniors Mark Flautner with 17 and Sawyer Thompson and Liam MacNeil with 12 each. Sophomore Elijah Almeida had 8 assists followed by Mark Flautner and Liam MacNeil. Elijah Almeida also had a total of 18 steals followed by Mark Flautner and Liam MacNeil who each had 8.

The rest of the varsity team played in Saline at the Hornet Invitational. They also went 3-1 losing only to Saline in extra time after a shoot out. The final score was 22-21. Pioneer beat Chelsea 14-1, Lake Orion 11-7 and Seaholm 18-0.

On Sept. 10, Pioneer hosted Huron Men’s Water Polo. What a rivalry they have had! Pioneer stole the show with a 14-3 win. Senior Sawyer Thompson had five goals followed by junior Henry Colvig with three. Senior Mark Flautner led the team for steals with 4. Senior Matthew Christiansen had ten saves in goal.

Junior Varsity also had a win over the River rats. It was a very high score of 20-14. Freshmen Cameron Boehnke and Brody Howe each had four goals!

Thanks to all of the Huron fans that drove across town to cheer on their boys! It is always nice to see you!

On Thursday (9/12), Pioneer hosted St. Francis de Sales of Toledo. Varsity’s game was a nail biter. Pioneer pulled out a win, 9-7. Lead scorers were Sawyer Thompson with five and Mark Flautner with four. Sophomore Elijah Almeida had 6 steals during the game. Matthew Christiansen was everywhere in goal with a total of 13 saves!

The JV game followed with a final score of 18-three. High scorers included freshman Brody Howe, Will Wood and Isak Woods, each with a hat trick!

The Pioneers travel to play against Birmingham Groves on Wednesday. Friday and Saturday JV will be traveling to Rockford to play in the Rockford JV tournament. Varsity is traveling to the west side of the state for the Hudsonville/Zeeland Varsity Tournament.
