Football: Dexter bounces back with rout of Bedford; Huron next

In a lead that has been written many times over the years, the Dexter Dreadnaughts righted the ship on Friday night. And, again, Dexter proved they have the talent to go big places – think Ford Field – this season.

The Dreadnaughts scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and three more in the second quarter in a 59-13 rout of Bedford on Friday night. The Kicking Mules were coming off a 48-3 win over Skyline and a tough 31-28 loss to Canton – so not exactly a pushover program.

Dexter improved to 2-1 on the season with wins over Bedford and Franklin and a loss to Saline. The Dreadnaughts play on a Thursday this week, hosting Huron at 7 p.m. The River Rats are 2-1 with back-to-back wins over Monroe and Skyline.

Friday’s win over Bedford was running back Ronny Johnson’s first huge game of the season. The senior and Northwestern commit scored four touchdowns, including an 80-yard TD run in the first quarter. He finished with 179 yards on the ground in just 10 carries.

Johnson’s 22-yard TD run gave Dexter an early lead. Cole Novara caught a 51-yard TD pass from Cooper Arnedt and Johnson’s 80-yard run gave Dexter 21 points in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Dexter scored on Johnson’s 30-yard run, a 49-yard pass from Arnedt to Jayden Jubeck and a 6-yard run by Johnson.

In the third quarter, Novara caught his second TD of the game – this time a 36-yard catch from Arnedt.

Trey Kuhr, who made all the extra points in the game, hit a 29-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Mason McAllister finished off Dexter’s scoring on a 1-yard in the fourth quarter.
