Swimming & Diving: Dexter falls to Saline; youngsters shine at tournament

The Dexter High School women’s swim and dive team traveled to Saline High School on Sept. 19, 2024 in their second SEC Red meet of the season. Despite 12 season-best swims/dive scores and 5 new personal records (PRs), the Hornets won the meet 109 to 74.

Sophomore Kayce McAllister achieved her third state cut of the season in the 100 Yard Freestyle, while Junior Rebekah Murillo earned two new MISCA cuts in the 200 IM and 100 Back.

Team Highlights included the following event winners:

  • 200 Yard Medley Relay: The team of McAllister, Harper Brown, Murillo, and Delia Smaby.
  • 200 Yard Freestyle Relay: McAllister, Grace McClellan, Smaby, and Emma Bishop.
  • 100 Yard Butterfly and 100 Breaststroke: Brown.
  • 100 Yard Backstroke: Murillo.

Results for Dexter:

  • Dexter’s team of Emily Weiszhaar, Natalia Rivera, Elena Ragnes and Jane Winker finished 5thin the 200 Yard Medley Relay.
  • Bishop and McClellan went 2ndand 3rd, respectively in the 200 Yard Freestyle.
  • Murillo was 2ndin the 200 Yard IM.
  • The Dreads had 3 swimmers in the 50 Yard Free: McAllister 2nd, Smaby 5thand Rivera 6th.
  • Dexter had 3 divers in the top 10: Ellie Saah 5th, Jillian Kinnard 6thand Lexi Gramling 7th.
  • The 100 Yard Freestyle saw McAllister 2nd, McClellan 3rdand Smaby 4th.
  • Bishop was 2ndin the 500 Freestyle, with teammate Weiszhaar 5th.
  • The team of Ragnes, Reagan Goldstein, Saah and Weiszhaar finished 3rd in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay.
  • Dexter’s 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team of Bishop, McClellan, Murillo and Brown finished the night with a 2ndplace finish.

Lady Dreads Swim & Dive Strong at Annual Freshman/Sophomore Invitational

On Saturday, the 21st Dexter hosted their annual Freshman/Sophomore Invitational, at Brighton High School. Dexter’s small but mighty team of 9th and 10th grade swimmers and divers posted solid performances throughout the day, including:

  • The team of Elena Ragnes, Delia Smaby, Emily Weiszhaar and Kayce McAllister finished 6th in the 200 Yard Medley Relay.
  • 200 Yard Freestyle saw Smaby 5thand Natalia Rivera in 9th.
  • McAllister finished 2ndin the 50 Yard Freestyle, with Ragnes 19th.
  • Ellie Saah continued to be the top scorer for Dexter in diving, coming in 4th, with Lexi Gramling 9th.
  • The 100 Yard Freestyle saw teammates Rivera and Weiszhaar finish in 13thand 14th.
  • Smaby finished 5thin the 500 free.
  • McAllister had the only win of the day for Dexter with a first-place finish in the 100 Yard Backstroke. Ragnes finished 7th.
  • In the last event of the competition, the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team of Weiszhaar, Rivera, Smaby and McAllister finished 6th.

The Lady Dreads will travel to Pioneer on Sept. 26 for their next SEC Red matchup.
