Garrett’s Space Hires Dynamic Non-Profit Leader as Executive Director

Ann Arbor —Garrett’s Space, an Ann Arbor-based suicide prevention non-profit, is thrilled to announce the hiring of Antonio David (“David”) Garcia as its new Executive Director. David will lead the organization through its next exciting phase of growth and development.
David most recently was Executive Director of the Detroit-based non-profit Affirmations, where his responsibilities included overseeing behavioral health programming for youth and adults struggling with their mental health. He previously served as Director of Policy and Community Building at the LGBT Center in Los Angeles, the world’s largest community center serving the queer community. David also previously served as the Director of the Y’s Camp Ohiyesa and held various leadership positions with the Ann Arbor Y.
“David is a seasoned executive and visionary leader who brings a wealth of experience and success leading other non-profits,” said Scott Halpert, Co-founder of Garrett’s Space. “He joins us at a pivotal time as we add greater in-person programming and build our residential center campus to support young adults struggling with depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation.”
Scott will step down as President and Chief Executive Officer and will assume the role of Chairman/President of the Board of Directors. Co-founder Julie Halpert will also transition from Chief Operating Officer to Vice President of the Garrett’s Space Board. Both Julie and Scott will remain actively involved, focusing on making Garrett’s Space a sustainable and transformative resource for struggling young adults who need something more than regular visits to their therapist.
“I’m excited to be joining the amazing Garrett’s Space team at such an important moment for the organization,” said Garcia. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to bring my many years of experience in the non-profit space to truly make a difference in the lives of our young adults.”
Julie added, “We know that transitioning leadership to David at this time will place Garrett’s Space in very capable hands and help us create the replicable model of care and support that this community and country desperately need.”
