Spotlight: Pioneer senior swimmers reflect on four years of winning

The most recent swimming dynasty at Pioneer High School includes four consecutive MHSAA Division 1 state titles for the boys’ program – just an incredible run (or swim in this case) for the Pioneers.

The Pioneer boys matched the girls team with their fourth consecutive Division 1 Swimming and Diving State Title as Pioneer racked up 275 points to edge Saline (245 points), Detroit Catholic Central (243.5) and Northville (226).

That senior class that graduated in the spring never lost a dual-meet or tournament in their four years. And two of those seniors, Jensen Wood and Christopher Leuciuc, helped get the team rolling at the State Finals.

Pioneer started the meet with a fourth-place finish in the medley relay. The team of Wood, Edward Zhang, Isaac Almeida and Leuciuc finished in 1:34.25.

Leuciuc also took fifth in the 50 free in 21.18 and was eighth in 46.95 in the 100 free. He also swam on the third-place 200 free relay team. Wood took sixth in 4:43.93 in the 500 free and was eighth (53.68) in the backstroke.

Wood and Leuciuc talked about the “Pioneer Way” before they headed off to college.

“There was a little bit of pressure coming in as freshman but mainly excitement for swimming for such a prominent team,” said Wood, who also was team captain of the Pioneer water polo team. “We have a really great coaching staff who knows how to bring out the best in every swimmer.

“All of the state titles were amazing but the 2024 season stood out to me the most because it was my senior year and leading the team as a captain and upperclassmen made it feel so much different in a good way.”

Wood says the “Pioneer Way” isn’t about winning state finals but about putting in the work necessary to compete at the highest level. “It’s nothing related to states, it’s all related to preparation and swimming every meet like it’s the most important of the year,” he said.

Wood, who went out with “great performances” at States, is attending the University of Vermont where he plans on pursuing a career in teaching. He doesn’t plan on swimming but leaves behind a pool full of memories in swimming.

Leuciuc, who didn’t swim at Pioneer his freshman year, says what makes Pioneer special is “the captain’s legacy each year passed down a powerful work ethic that inspired me to become the best I could. We work hard and success followed.”

Leuciuc, who is going to Case Western Reserve University to swim while majoring in business, said the 2024 title meant the most. “I got to lead my team like my captains did my sophomore and in the past,” he said. “Winning every meet was a big goal for me. Going under 21 in the 50 free in a relay was also important to me.”
