Ypsilanti recognized among “Best College Towns in America” by WalletHub

YPSILANTI — Ypsilanti, home to Eastern Michigan University, has been named one of the Best College Towns in America for 2025 by WalletHub, a leading personal finance website.

WalletHub’s annual ranking evaluates more than 400 U.S. college cities and towns using key indicators of student satisfaction, including affordability, social environment, and academic and economic opportunities. Metrics such as housing costs, higher education quality, and rental availability play a significant role in determining the overall score.

“Ypsilanti has something for everyone,” said Gray Connor, a senior studying media studies and journalism. “Unique shops in Depot Town, diverse restaurants, and a lot of exciting community events. There are also many beautiful parks and trails to explore.”

Ypsilanti earned favorable marks in affordability and social environment, reflecting its strong sense of community and accessibility for students. Local favorites such as Depot Town, downtown Ypsilanti, and the Huron River continue to attract both residents and visitors with their vibrant atmosphere and rich history.

Since establishing its home in Ypsilanti in 1849, Eastern, initially known as Michigan State Normal School, has evolved from an institution focused on teacher education into a comprehensive range of programs. Throughout its history, Eastern emphasizes its community impact and inclusive environment, creating programs such as Engage@EMU, which focuses on relationships between community and business partnerships.

In recent years, EMU has invested heavily in campus revitalization, including the addition of two new student housing complexes, Lakeview Apartments and Westview Apartments, and significant renovations to all remaining residence halls. The university has also developed new green spaces on the sites of the former Brown/Munson and Jones/Goddard residence halls to promote student well-being and foster a vibrant on-campus community.

Upgrades to academic facilities, such as the 3D Arts Complex, Pierce Hall, and Roosevelt Hall, further demonstrate EMU’s dedication to creating modern, collaborative learning environments.

“Since starting at Eastern, everyone I have come in contact with genuinely cares about my success as a student and gaining meaningful experience during my time here,” said Alexis Torres, a senior studying public relations. “I’ve made many great friends in classes and events. I also feel supported by my professors to do my best and prepare for my future career as they are always there to help with whatever I need.”
