District Baseball: Dexter knocks out Skyline in semifinal; Huron tops Pioneer

After winning its first District game on Saturday in easy fashion, the Dexter baseball team faced SEC foe Pinckney in the championship game with a District title on the line.

The two evenly matched teams battled early with both teams scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. The Dreads scored two more runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-2 lead. The Pirates answered with a run in the top of the third.

With Dexter leading 4-3, the weather went from bad to worse to unplayable and the game was stopped. The District final will resume on Monday at Skyline High School.

Six of Dexter’s starting nine already had at least one hit in the championship game. Ben Cabana had a hit and two runs scored. Kevin DeVoogd and Nate Kniesteadt each had a hit and an RBI for the Dreads.

Jacoby Haley held Skyline to just one hit and one walk over five innings in a 10-0 win over the Eagles in the District opener on Saturday. While Haley was grounding the Eagles, the Dexter offense was lighting up the scoreboard with two runs in the first, five in the second, two in the fourth and one in the fifth to end the game after five innings.

Dexter had nine hits in the win.

Evan Krolewski was 2-for-2 including a double with three runs scored and two walks for Dexter. DeVoogd had a hit, three walks and four RBI and Cabana had a hit, three walks and three runs scored. Kniesteadt and Haley each had two RBI. David Kreske had a double and a run scored.

Huron knocks out Pioneer

The Huron baseball team didn’t exactly rip the cover off the baseball but they turned one big inning into a trip to the District final on Saturday at Saline. The River Rats led off the game with a hit and then didn’t get another one until the sixth inning when they scored all five runs in a 5-4 win over crosstown rival Pioneer in a District semifinal game.

In the sixth inning down 1-0, the River Rats got hits from Hayden Glover, Richard Hurley and Nate Hawley to help put five runs on the board. Glover, Hawley, Taha Ebrahim, Alex Cole and William Downer all scored runs for Huron.

Pioneer led 1-0 after scoring a run in the fifth inning. Matt Grier led off the inning with a double and scored the first run of the game.

After falling behind 5-1, the Pioneers fought back, scoring three runs in the seventh but couldn’t plate the tying run.

The Pioneers scored four runs on three hits with two errors and left seven on base. The River Rats scored five runs on four hits with one error and left two on base.

Huron will play the winner of the Lincoln-Saline game in Monday’s final. The other semifinal game and the championship game were postponed because of rain.
