Boys Basketball: Dreadnaughts can’t overcome rough start in loss to Monroe

While the snow and ice were prominent outside, the Dexter boys’ basketball team slipped out of the gate and could never find their footing in a tough 59-56 loss to host Monroe on Friday night. Still, there is plenty of hope and promise on the court in Dexter – along with plenty of time to hit their stride.

“We couldn’t find a way to dig ourselves out of the hole we put ourselves in during the first quarter,” said Dexter Coach Jason Rushton. “That really came back to hurt us in the end and was the difference in this one.”

Dexter fell behind 9-3 after the first quarter cut it to 23-20 at halftime. Monroe kept the lead after three with a 20-16 run to take a 43-36 lead into the fourth quarter. The Dreadnaughts saved their best for last on the offensive end of the floor, outscoring the Trojans 20-16 in the final period but came up short in the end.

Monroe’s Xander Middleton scored 19 of his game-high 31 points in the second half. He was the only Trojan in double figures.

Evan Haroldson led Dexter with 18 points, along with 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Brennan Parachek had a strong game with a double-double – 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Cal Bavineau had 9 points, 6 assists and 2 steals and Joey Tessmer was a “nice spark off the bench” with 8 points.
