Girls Basketball: Dexter opens with two non-conference victories

And they’re off …

The Dexter girls’ basketball team has sprinted out of the blocks with a couple of wins to start the season, including an impressive 55-37 victory over Salem in last week’s season opener.

The Dreadnaughts’ two returning stars, Alena Blumberg and Chloe Perry, each scored seven points and Dexter held Salem to just three free throws in the opening quarter for a 14-3 lead. In a crazy second quarter, Dexter scored 17 points but Salem answered with 19 points and trailed the Dreads 31-22 at halftime.

Dexter’s defense went from allowing 19 points in the second quarter to pitching a shutout in the third quarter as the Dreadnaughts outscored the Rocks 11-0 in the third quarter to put the game away.

Blumberg and Perry each scored 22 points to start the season on a strong offensive note. Five Dreadnaughts each finished with two points.

Blumberg knocked down FIVE three-pointers as part of Dexter’s 28 points in the second quarter in a 69-46 win over Plymouth Christian on Dec. 3 in a game they trailed after one quarter. PC led 12-7 after the first period before Dexter’s 28-11 run in the second quarter. Dexter put the game away with a 19-8 third quarter run in a non-conference victory.

Blumberg finished with a game-high 30 points. Perry made three triples in the game and finished with 21 points. Addison Chase and Heidi Fuchs each scored eight points in the win.

Dexter plays at Bedford on Friday night.
