Youth & Teens December and January Events at the Dexter District Library

Looking for something fun and free to do this holiday season? The Dexter District Library has a variety of activities for Youth and Teens this winter. On Saturday, December 17, children of all ages are invited to stop by the Library between 10:00 am – 11:00 am and celebrate the season by making reindeer crafts and winter decorations. Come again on Friday, December 30, between 10:00 am – 11:00 am to make hats and noisemakers to ring in the New Year.

Join us for a special Winter Wonderland Story Time at 10:30 am on Monday, December 19. This program is geared for children ages five and under, but everyone is welcome to attend.

The Library has many programs planned during Winter Break. Some of the programs are drop-in events and require no registration, such as Drop-In Makerspace from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm on Thursday, December 29, or Drop-In Games from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm on Thursday, January 5 for children in grades K – 8. On Wednesday, January 4 from 10:00 am – 11:00 am, children in grades K – 4 can start out the new year by creating a personalized vision board of their biggest dreams and goals. Registration is required on our website for this event.

For the Tweens and Teens during Winter Break there is a Bad Art program on Tuesday, December 27 from 1:30 pm – 2:45 pm. A variety of materials will be available for you to create your “disasterpiece” and then you’ll get to vote on the “worst of the worst”. If you’re in grades 7-12 and love anime and manga, you don’t want to miss meeting up at the Library on Wednesday, January 4 at 2:00 pm to watch anime, do crafts, share your drawings, and talk about your favorite series with other teens. Registration is required on our website for both of these events.

The winter session of Story Time starts January 16 and runs until March 9. Drop-In Story Times are at 11:00 am on Mondays and repeated on Thursdays and require no registration. Toddler Story Time and Preschool Story Time are offered on Tuesday or Wednesday mornings at 10:00 am and 11:00 am and registration is required for this 8-week session. Beginning Monday, January 2, parents or caregivers of children may register on our website through our calendar of events or by calling 734-426-4477.

Children ages five and under and their caregivers are invited to stop by the Library on Saturday, January 14 at 12:00 pm for a KinderConcert! Members of the A2SO will lead children on a guided introduction to the instruments of the orchestra.

On Monday, January 16 at 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm, children in grades K – 4 can make outer space themed art while learning about the nighttime sky with Longway Planetarium. Registration is required and space is limited.

There are many opportunities for teens and tweens at the Library. Our Teen Advisory Group meets the second Saturday of every month at 1:00 pm. Come on the third Friday of every month to participate in tournament-style play of Magic the Gathering, co-sponsored with SRSLY Dexter. Join us virtually on Monday, January 16 at 4:00 pm to learn how to make your own pizza at home. These programs may require registration. Please check our website calendar of events.
