Swimming & Diving: Dexter begins new season with an impressive splash

The Dexter boys’ swimming and diving team had a busy five days to start the season – and now get some time to regroup over the holidays before the next meet on Jan. 5 against Bedford and Tecumseh.

It was a strong start for the Dreadnaughts, who opened with wins over Milan (123-59) and Chelsea (125.5-57.5) in a tri-meet at Wylie on Dec. 13. So, let’s start there.

Dexter opened the meet with a win in the medley relay. The team of Jude Smith, Chance McArtor, Matthew Resende and Eric Smaby went 1:48.32 to finish first.

The Dreads went one-two-three in the 200 free with Dylan O’Connor (first, 1:55.82), Jack Haidl (second, 1:58.35) and Dane Lee (third, 2:00.20).

Liam MacNeil won the 200 IM in 2:18.54 and Resende won the 50 free in 22.96.

Branden Anderson was third in diving (155 points).

Dexter went one-two in the 100 butterfly with Resende (first, 55.71) and O’Connor (second, 58.40). Owen Ragnes won the 100 free in 53.61. Dexter dominated the 500 free with Haidl first (5:13.37), Lee second (5:23.72), Smaby third (5:25.81) and MacNeil fourth (5:30.38).

Dexter’s 200 free relay team of Ragnes, O’Connor, Lee and Smaby took first in 1:37.94.

Smith was second in the backstroke (1:02.56) and McArtor won the breaststroke in 1:12.03.

Dexter’s 400 free relay team of Resende, O’Connor, Smith and Ragnes won in 3:35.64.

On Thursday, Dexter swam at Ann Arbor Huron in an SEC Red Division opener, falling to the River Rats 97-88.

Haidl won the 200 free (1:56.72), Resende won the 50 free (22.71) and the butterfly (56.10), Anderson won diving (155.15), Lucas Greatorex won the 100 free (51.52), and Haidl won the 500 free (5:11.73). Dexter’s 400 free relay team of Resende, Ragnes, O’Connor and Greatorex won in 3:32.37.

On Saturday, the Dreadnaughts competed in the highly competitive Warrior Relays hosted by Brother Rice at Waterford Kettering High School. Defending Division 1 state champion Pioneer took first place with 362 points. Birmingham Groves was second (338 points), University of Detroit Jesuit was third (328 points), Dexter finished fourth with 286 points, four points ahead of AA Huron. Brother Rice was sixth with 216 points in the nine-team meet.

Dexter’s 800 free relay team of O’Connor, Smaby, Lee and Haidl took third in 7:59.54 and the 850 relay crescendo team of Ben Alekseev, MacNeil, O’Connor and Haidl finished third in 8:37.90. The 200 free relay team of Resende, Ragnes, Greatorex and Smaby took third in 1:32.93. The 200 breaststroke team of Alekseev, Wheeler, McArtor and Ethan Vince took fourth in 2:22.03.
