Track & Field Roundup: Local teams putting up impressive starts to the season

The Huron track and field teams headed to Allen Park on Saturday to compete in the fun-filled Allen Park Co-Ed Relays that may or may not have involved ice cream. The meet mixes up the boys and girls teams in a relay format that is meant to be fun – and it certainly was fun.

In the girls’ meet, Huron finished sixth out of 15 teams with 29 points. Oxford took first place with 64.5 while Woodhaven was third (42) and Lake Orion fourth (41.6). Huron finished seventh with 49 points in the boys’ meet. Lake Orion took first (82) with Oxford second (79.5) and Grosse Pointe South third (65).

The meet finished with the 4×400 “Brain Freeze Relay” where runners eat a pint of ice cream and run 400 meters. The race even came with rules – All 16 together eating 1/4 quart vanilla. Must finish all in a bowl, spoon provided if desired. You lose it out of the bowl to the ground results in a 40-second penalty. If you vomit Ice Cream your team is “DQed” – get it?

In the boys’ meet, Huron was second in the 4×50 relay (51.51), 4×100 relay (48.46) and the 4×200 relay (1:41.77). The 4×400 relay was fourth (4:01.70) and the DMR 4000 relay was seventh (9:17.12) and the DMR 4800 relay was sixth (15:50.42).
