Baseball: Pioneer takes 2 of 3 from Dexter in exciting SEC league action

The Dexter and Pioneer baseball teams met on the diamond for three games in two days that included two decisive wins by each team and then a 1-0 cliffhanger won by Pioneer.

Let’s start at the top of the batting order – Tuesday’s single game at Dexter.

The Dreadnaughts took a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning when Pioneer exploded for 11 runs in the top of the seventh for a 13-6 win. Pioneer had 10 hits compared to six for the home team.

Tys Verhey-Henke led the Pioneers to victory on the hill. The righthander allowed three hits and three runs over six innings, striking out three.  Joey Wisniewski threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.

Brock Komaromi took the loss for Dexter. He surrendered seven runs on three hits over one and one-third innings, striking out one. Wyatt Novara started the game for Dexter and surrendered just one run on four hits over five innings, striking out nine.

Chance Sobbry led Dexter with two hits. Julius Kass and Adam Adair each had two hits for Pioneer. Avery McEwen had three RBI.

The teams met again on Wednesday for a doubleheader at Pioneer.

The first game was a classic pitching dual decided in the last inning. Pioneer’s Caleb Lorenz had seven strikeouts and allowed just four hits and two walks in a complete-game 1-0 shutout of the Dreadnaughts. Adair knocked in the game’s only run in the bottom of the seventh inning to break the scoreless tie. Dexter’s Conor Sweeny was every bit as good on the mound for the visitors. Sweeny had 12 Ks and scattered three hits with two walks in the tough loss. Neither team committed an error in the well-played game.

Dexter’s bats exploded in the nightcap as the Dreadnaughts collected 16 hits and scored 14 runs in the third inning for a 20-3 win in a game called after three. Dexter scored a run in the first and five in the second to take a 6-2 lead.

Joey Tessmer was 2-4 with four runs scored and four RBI – not a bad day. Chance Sobbry (five RBI) and Novara (3 runs) each had three hits while Sean White, Noah Pitts (3 runs, 3 RBI) and Larry Salisbury had two hits apiece for the Dreads.
