Football: Dexter dominant again to tackle fifth straight victory

For the fourth week in a row the Dexter football team put 50-plus points on the board while the defense dominated on the other side of the ball in another lopsided victory. The young Dreadnaughts led 16-0 after the first quarter and 37-0 at halftime in a familiar script that ended with another easy victory.

Dexter defeated Monroe 51-0 to celebrate Homecoming with a victory over the overmatched Trojans.

Dexter improved to 5-2 overall and 5-1 in the SEC and have won five straight by a combined score of 261-29 – and 22 of the 29 were scored by Huron in the fourth quarter with the game already decided.

The Dreadnaughts face a 1-6 Lincoln team on Friday in what should be another chapter in this amazing Dexter season. The Dreads have scored over 40 points against Lincoln in the last six meetings, including twice in the 2020 season. Dexter won 45-0 last year.

Dexter QB Cooper Arnedt had another huge game for the home team. He threw four touchdowns in the game – 76 yards to Holden Niemi, 29 yards to Niemi, 22 yards to Jaiden Juback and 65 yards to Niemi. Arnedt was 10 of 16 passing for 267 yards with no interceptions.

Niemi, only a freshman, had a career night with five catches for 196 yards and the fourth touchdowns. Juback, a junior, had four catches for 64 yards.

The Dreads also moved the ball well on the ground. Junior Ronny Johnson had 16 carries for 88 yards including TD runs of 2 yards and 10 yards. Sophomore Cole Novara scored on an 18-yard TD run in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring.

The defense was its typical dominant unit, with many players stepping up and contributing to the team’s fourth shutout of the season. The Dreadnaughts held the Trojans to 97 yards of total offense.

The defense was led again by junior Owen Wondrash with 11 tackles and a forced fumble. Junior Chance Sobbry dominated up front with 8 tackles, one for loss.  Sophomore Nathan Gersh had 7 tackles and a fumble recovery. Sophomore Mateo Kipke added 4 tackles, including a tackle for loss and a sack.  Seniors Sean White and Xavier Cook owned the line of scrimmage.
