Ann Arbor City Administrator Announces Police Chief Recommendation

ANN ARBOR — Monday, Dec. 18, City Council will consider a recommendation by Ann Arbor City Administrator Milton Dohoney Jr. to appoint Andre Anderson to police chief. If confirmed by City Council, Anderson is expected to begin leading the AAPD in early 2024.

Anderson most recently was the assistant police chief of Tempe, Arizona (2021–2023). He previously served as Rochester, New York, executive deputy chief (2020–2021) and commander in Glendale, Arizona. (2012–2020). Anderson has a bachelor’s degree in public safety administration and a master’s degree in educational leadership. He and his wife of 35 years, a retired Navy and Homeland Security veteran, are looking forward to relocating to Ann Arbor in the new year.

“I’m confident that Andre’s broad management experience and community engagement capabilities will be an asset to the Ann Arbor Police Department, which has a well-earned reputation for excellence,” said City Administrator Dohoney. “Andre has a deep understanding of current law enforcement challenges nationwide as well as opportunities for improvement. I’m confident he will serve the Ann Arbor community well.”

According to Anderson, “I believe the City of Ann Arbor is working collaboratively to implement plans to enhance an environment where community policing, the community and city government serve as problem-solving participatory partners. I am committed to building mutual trust and public safety while creating a shared vision and leadership approach that sets our agency apart and revered as the nation’s model police agency.”

The police chief position is responsible for the administrative supervision and leadership of police services and emergency management. City Charter requires City Council to confirm the police chief.
