Second Annual festival celebrates growing community of Michigan filmmakers

Ann Arbor – The Sparking Creation Film Festival will showcase works made by Michigan filmmakers on April 21st at 7pm. Over 20 films were submitted and judged by three leaders in the entertainment industry: Pamela Conn, Robert C. Wilson and Clifton Chippewa. The films cover a variety of styles that are sure to delight and surprise viewers.

This festival supports the growing independent film community in Michigan and will give local filmmakers a chance to celebrate each other’s work. Students from campuses across the state will get to network with their peers from diverse backgrounds.

The organizer of this festival, Johannes Pardi, is a 1st generation Estonian immigrant who understands the struggle of integrating into a new culture. “I want the festival to accept people from different cultures and schools,” he said. Some film festivals are exclusive to specific demographics; Johannes wants this festival to be a mix of it all.

Ann Arbor is a haven for artists of all disciplines and film is no exception. The city’s great commitment to motion pictures is shown through the AAFF. The Sparking Creation Film Festival honors this tradition of uplifting indie films by presenting a wide range of genres made by diverse groups of media makers.

Many people dream of sharing their work on a big screen in front of a receptive audience and this festival will give them a chance to do just that at no cost. Johannes took on most of the up front fees to make this event happen because he knows how much film matters to this community. “Promoting inclusivity and accessibility is our main goal in this festival,” Pardi said. “That’s why we are going to great lengths to keep it free.”

The event is sponsored by the Michigan Theater, the Central Student Government, Pardi Productions, Warpaint Salon, Krita Pardi Alteration, Kodu Detroit Estonians and Ashtenwan Photo.
