Boys Track: Huron lands seventh at D-1 State Finals; Dexter’s Sheldon 2nd in pole vault

Kalamazoo Central won a wild three-team race to the finish line at the MHSAA Lower Peninsula Division 1 Boys State Finals at East Kentwood on June 1. The Maroon Giants finished first with 41 points, just ahead of Clinton Township Chippewa Valley (39) and Belleville (38). Walled Lake Central was fourth (31.5) followed by Northville (31), and Grand Haven (29).

Huron crossed the finish line in seventh place with 26 points. Dexter was 31st with 8 points, Pioneer was 36th (5 points) and Skyline 41st (4 points).

In the 400 meters, Skyline senior Henry Shaieb ran a PR time of 47.93 to land fifth.

In the 800 meters, Dexter senior Brandon Anderson was 16th in 1:56.25. Pioneer senior Eric Overdier was 24th in 1:58.61.

Overdier crossed in ninth place in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:18.99. Skyline senior Mason Jett ran a PR 4:22.65 to finish 13th. Dexter senior Vaughn Meyer was 18th (4:23.80) and Anderson was 21st (4:24.7). Pioneer senior Vincent Peterson Sand was 19th in 4:24.5.

Pioneer freshman Kamari Ronfeldt earned All-State honors with his fourth-place finish in the 3200 meters. He ran a PR time of 9:09.60. Skyline senior Luke Suliman was 11th in 9:23.4.

In the 110 hurdles, Huron senior Jackson Hayward was fifth in 14.57.

Huron’s 4×100 team of Georgio Pitts, Brandon Graham, Kinley Poole and Elijah Hayward finished sixth in 42.23. In the 4×200 relay, Huron’s team of Pitts, Elijah Hayward, Poole and Graham finished 19th in 1:29.81.   


In the 4×400 relay, Skyline’s team of Leland Weiser, Emanuel Morrell-Weston, Jett and Shaieb took 15th in 3:25.32.

In the 4×800, Dexter’s team of Anderson, Julian Linebaugh, Meyer and Caleb Snyder finished 11th in 7:58.98. Huron’s team of Henry Beard, Walker Brose, Thomas Conley and Francisco Dura took 29th (8:10.92) and Skyline’s team of Kyle Krasan, Adam Repp, Suliman and Jett took 30th (8:26.79).

Huron had a strong showing in the high jump with two River Rats landing in the top five. Seniors Andrew Harding and Charlie Garner both went 6-9 to finish third and fourth respectively. Teammate Camron Dew was 13th (6-5).

Dexter senior Clark Sheldon was second in the pole vault, clearing 14-6. Teammate Benjamin Sackman, a senior, was 12th (13-6). 

Huron’s Charlie Garner capped his high school career with a strong showing in the long jump. The senior went 22-10.5 to finish second overall and earn All-State honors.
