Field Hockey: Dexter blanks Skyline 5-0 to advance to semifinals

The Dexter field hockey team continued its defense of its state title on Tuesday with a 5-0 win over host Skyline in a Division 2 quarterfinal game. 

Dexter advances to Thursday’s semifinal game against Father Gabriel Richard. The Irish knocked off Cranbrook-Kingswood 3-0 in the first quarterfinal game at Skyline. Dexter-FGR will face off at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Chelsea.

Dexter led Skyline 2-0 after the first quarter and 3-0 at halftime. The Dreads added goals in the third and fourth quarter.    

Junior Claire Dubuque scored at 8:47 of the first period with an assist from junior Addison Zogaib to get the Dreadnaughts on the board. A few minutes later, Zogaib scored with assists from junior Aiden Weinmann and junior Allison St. Amour to push the lead to 2-0.

Zogaib scored in the second quarter at 14:30 to make it 3-0.

Weinmann had both goals in the second half for the Dreadnaughts. The first came on a corner at 3:28 of the third quarter with an assist from Dubuque. The second one also came on a corner at 8:56 of the fourth quarter with an assist from Lillian Mitchell.

Junior Audrey Owen-Smith had the shutout for Dexter.

The other side of the bracket will feature a semifinal game between Detroit Country Day and Chelsea. The Bulldogs defeated University Liggett 2-0 while Country Day knocked off East Grand Rapids 6-0.

The championship game is at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26 at East Grand Rapids HS.
